Tips To Prepare Yourself For Surgery

There are many ways you can make sure that you are prepared for surgery. Whether your surgery is for a particular illness or whether it is plastic/ cosmetic surgery. It can be quite nerve-racking when you are approaching the day of your surgery.

You must prepare yourself both mentally and physically before the time comes around. Here are a few tips that can get you prepared for your surgery.

Attend Your Pre-operative Assessment Before Surgery

Many hospitals and surgeons will ask you to have a pre-operation assessment. All this will do is ask questions about your current health status. As well as your previous medical history and whether or not you have had any problems in the past. This can either be done over the phone, an email, or you will have to go into the practice/ hospital.

If you see them in person, you are more than likely to have a few tests whilst you are there. The reason for this is to make sure that you have no medical problems that need to be treated before your operation. All these tests will depend on whether or not you will be going under anaesthetic. Including the time of operation that you will be having.

There are a variety of tests that can be performed in your pre-operation assessment. This can be blood tests, urine tests or even pregnancy tests for women. These assessments are something that will be performed a few days before your operation.

Fast Before Your Surgery

Do not presume that you have to fast before every operation. Your doctor will tell you before your operation if you need to eat or not. This goes for both food and water. The reason for this is so you do not vomit while you are under anaesthetic.

This will vary if you are diabetic. You must let your medical team know (they probably already know before your operation anyways) that you are diabetic. Precautions will be taken if you are diabetic and if you take insulin so you must let them know. This will more than likely be brought up in the pre-operative assessment.

Make Sure You Are Clean

Hygiene is very important on a day to day basis. It is even more important when it comes to your breast implant replacement or other surgeries that you could be undergoing. You need to make sure that you remove all body piercings, make-up and nail polish before any operation.

The reason for this is to reduce any bacteria being brought into the practice or hospital. Another reason why you should remove your nail polish is so the doctors can make sure that your blood circulation is still healthy. Some places may suggest you to wash fully before surgery.

Summary

These are the three most important things that will help you get prepared before you have surgery. Making sure your body is clean is one of the most important ones that are in your hands. Make sure you answer all your questions truthfully when it comes to your pre-operation assessment. The reason for this being that it can affect your operation.
