Chemistry Class 11 CBSE Reduced Upto 30%

Due to the Covid-19 prevailing circumstances in the country, the officials of CBSE forward with the Union HRD Minister have chosen to reduce the course load. The officials have overcome the syllabus of Class 11 CBSE 2020-21 including Class 11 Chemistry Syllabus by up to 30%. It was also notified that core concepts have not been deleted, only some parts of the chapter have been banned from the Class 11 Chemistry Syllabus.

The Chemistry Class 11 CBSE includes both Theory and Practical. The theory exam contains 70 marks while the possible exam is held for 30 marks.

 In this section, we will cover the Chemistry Class 11 CBSE syllabus of both Theory & Practical.

Syllabus For Chemistry Class 11 CBSE

As stated above, the theory exam of CBSE Class 11 Chemistry carries 70 marks. The total time continuation of the exam is three hours. Class 11 Chemistry includes 13 chapters:

Let us now look into the details of the CBSE Syllabus for Class 11 Chemistry Theory.

Unit 1: Some Basic Concepts Of Chemistry

General Introduction: Importance and scope of Chemistry. Atomic and molecular masses, mole concept and molar mass, empirical and molecular formula, percentage composition, chemical reactions, stoichiometry and calculations based on stoichiometry.

Unit 2: Structure Of Atom

Bohr’s model and its limitations, the concept of shells and subshells, dual nature of matter and light, de Broglie’s relationship, the concept of orbitals, quantum numbers, Heisenberg uncertainty principle, shapes of s, p and d orbitals, electronic configuration of atoms, rules for filling electrons in orbitals – Aufbau principle, Pauli’s exclusion principle and Hund’s rule, stability of half-filled and completely filled orbitals.

Unit 3: Classification Of Elements & Periodicity In Properties

Modern periodic law and the present form of the periodic table, periodic trends in properties of elements -atomic radii, ionic radii, Ionization enthalpy, electronegativity, electron gain enthalpy, valency.

Unit 4: Chemical Bonding And Molecular Structure

Valence electrons, ionic bond, covalent bond, Lewis structure,  bond parameters, the polar character of covalent bond, the covalent character of ionic bond, resonance, the geometry of covalent molecules, valence bond theory,  involving s, VSEPR theory, the concept of hybridization, p and d orbitals, and shapes of some simple molecules, molecular orbital theory of homonuclear diatomic molecules(qualitative idea only), Hydrogen bond.

Unit 5: States Of Matter – Gases & Liquids

Three states of matter, intermolecular interactions, melting and boiling points, the role of gas laws in elucidating the concept of the molecule, Charles law,  types of bonding, Gay Lussac’s law, Avogadro’s law, ideal behavior, empirical derivation of gas equation, Avogadro’s number, ideal gas equation and deviation from ideal behavior.

Unit 6: Chemical Thermodynamics

Concepts of Systems and types of systems, work, heat, energy, surroundings, extensive and intensive properties, state functions. The first law of thermodynamics -internal energy and enthalpy, Hess’s law of constant heat summation, measurement of U and H, enthalpy of bond dissociation, combustion, formation, sublimation, phase transition,  atomization, ionization, solution, and dilution. Second law of Thermodynamics (brief introduction) Book of entropy as a state function, Gibb’s current change for natural and nonspontaneous processes. Third law of thermodynamics.

Unit 7: Equilibrium

Equilibrium in physical and chemical processes, the law of mass action, equilibrium constant, factors affecting equilibrium – Le Chatelier’s principle,  dynamic nature of equilibrium, ionic equilibrium- ionization of acids and bases, strong and weak electrolytes, degree of ionization, ionization of polybasic acids, buffer solution, acid strength, the concept of pH, solubility product, common ion effect (with illustrative examples).

Unit 8: Redox Reaction

Concept of oxidation and reduction, oxidation number,  redox reactions, balancing redox reactions, in terms of loss and gain of electrons, and change in oxidation number.

Unit 9: s-block Elements

Group 1 and Group 2 Elements General introduction, occurrence, anomalous properties of the first element of each group, electronic configuration, diagonal relationship, trends in the variation of properties (such as ionization enthalpy), trends in chemical reactivity with oxygen, hydrogen, and halogens, water, use.

Unit 10: p-Block Elements

General Introduction to p -Block Elements

Group 13 Elements: General introduction, occurrence, variation of properties, electronic configuration, oxidation states, anomalous properties of the first element of the group, trends in chemical reactivity, Boron – physical and chemical properties.

Group 14 Elements:

General introduction, occurrence, variation of properties, electronic configuration, oxidation states, trends in chemical reactivity, anomalous behavior of first elements. allotropic forms, Carbon-catenation, physical and chemical properties.
